Firearms Destruction

Turn in Firearms, Ammunition, or Explosives for Destruction

  • Anyone can turn in unwanted firearms, ammunition, or explosives for destruction. You may call (650) 363-4911 to arrange to meet a deputy at a Sheriff's Office station parking lot or have a Deputy retrieve items from your home.
    • If you know how to safely unload the firearm, please do so. If you wish to transport it to a Sheriff's Office station, it must be unloaded and locked in a secure container pursuant to Penal Code 25610. Transport the locked firearm in the trunk of your vehicle. Ammunition must be in a separate container in a separate area of the vehicle. Please do not bring any firearms into any Sheriff's Office station; please ask a deputy to meet you in the parking lot to retrieve it.
    • If you do not know how to safely unload the firearm or do not have an appropriate container, please do not attempt to unload it or bring it in. Call (650) 363-4911 to have a deputy retrieve it.
    • Please call (650) 363-4911 to have a deputy retrieve unwanted explosives (ex. fireworks) from you. 
    • Items submitted for disposal cannot be retrieved later.

 

 

Turn in Firearms for Safekeeping

  • You may call (650) 363-4911 to have a deputy retrieve firearms or ammunition that you wish to surrender for safekeeping to be in compliance with a protective order or restraining order.
    • These firearms will be held for safekeeping for 180 days. If they remain unclaimed after 180 days, they will be disposed of pursuant to Penal Code § 33875.
  • You may call (650) 363-4911 to have a deputy retrieve firearms or ammunition that you wish to surrender to be in compliance with a General Notice of Firearm Prohibition.
    • These firearms will be held for safekeeping for 30 days. If they remain unclaimed after 30 days, they will be disposed of pursuant to Penal Code § 29810(i).
