Corrections Division

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division operates two jail facilities, the Maguire Correctional Facility and the Maple Street Correctional Center (MSCC). The Corrections Division also operates the Alternative Sentencing Bureau, which includes the Sheriff’s Work Program, Electronic Monitoring and Work Furlough Programs. Through these three operations, the Corrections Division staff serves the Court, other law enforcement agencies, inmates, inmate’s families, and crime victims by working collaboratively within the judicial system and the community. Our mission is to protect public safety, reduce inmate recidivism, and improve the quality of life of those we serve by operating safe and secure correctional facilities.

There are four San Mateo County Corrections locations. The Facility’s staff ensures inmates:

  • appear in court and complete jail sentences
  • are incarcerated in a manner that provides for their medical, nutritional, hygienic, legal, and spiritual needs
  • receive services designed to provide opportunities to improve their lives, both during and after incarceration, in order to reduce recidivism.

The Maguire Correctional Facility, also known as the main jail, primarily houses male inmates and provides incarceration and rehabilitative services for pretrial and court-sentenced inmates.

The new Maple Street Correctional Center provides housing for both male and female inmates as well as dedicated Men’s and Women’s Transitional housing. It provides incarceration / rehabilitative services for pretrial and court-sentenced inmates.

The Transitional Housing Unit is a work-oriented facility, and as such, all inmates are expected to perform some type of basic labor-oriented task. Individual work assignments range from washing dishes in the kitchen, working in the laundry room, participating in clean up details in and around THU and the perimeter of the Maple Street Correctional Center and the Maguire Correctional Facility. The facility houses minimum security inmates who are either participants in the Sheriff’s Work Furlough Program or are assigned to perform work in and around the facility property.

*Effective July 1, 2021, all Alternative Sentencing Bureau Program applicants will be not be required to pay any fees associated with the program.

Sheriff's Work Program (SWP) was established in 1983 as an alternative to high cost incarceration and full-time confinement in a jail facility for those persons considered low-risk, minimum-security offenders. Defendants serve time by participating in a work program, performing manual labor work in lieu of confinement. Participants must be recommended for the Program by a Court Order.

Electronic Monitoring Program (EMP) was established in the late 90’s and the Work Furlough Program (WF) was established in the early 2000’s as an alternative to incarceration. Utilizing advanced electronic equipment and personnel surveillance, both programs provide an alternative to incarceration for the low-risk offenders with a stable housing environment. Carefully screened participants must be full time employees, full time students, and/or attend treatment programs. Participants must be recommended by a Court Order for participation. Participants are ultimately approved/disapproved by the Alternative Sentencing Sergeant.  If you have been recommended to participate in any of the programs, you must call the number below to schedule an appointment: (650) 599-3030.

Please call at least five days after you are recommended by the courts.  When calling you will need to provide the following information:

  • Court case number
  • Surrender date
  • Length of sentence

On the day of your appointment you will need to bring the following:

  • An official government issued photo I.D.
  • You are required to be on time for your scheduled appointment.
  • Completed application 2023 WF-EMP Application (print application, complete application, and bring it to your scheduled appointment)
