San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Transparency Portal

This portal provides access to key data and information about our operations, offering insight into our efforts to improve public safety.

We believe a transparent approach to sharing information leads to greater understanding and builds trust among the communities we proudly serve.

In the Transparency Portal, community members will find detailed information on crime and arrest statistics, use of force incidents, data related to our correctional facilities, eviction actions, enforcement of the Three-Foot Bicycle Rule and demographics of the employees of the Sheriff's Office.

We hope you find this dashboard as a helpful resource.

  • ADP - Average Daily Population
  • Bookings – Individuals newly admitted into custody
  • ECW (Electronic Control Weapon) - This refers to devices like Tasers that are considered less than lethal force
  • ECW Cycles – each cycle refers to one standard discharge (typically 5 seconds) of the ECW
  • Multiple cycles may be administered if the subject does comply after the first
  • The number of ECW cycles is an important indicator of force escalation and is tracked for accountability and review
  • ECW Effectiveness – This metric refers to whether the ECW achieved the intended effect
  • Effective: the subject was incapacitated or compiled after ECW use
  • Ineffective: the ecw failed to make contact, had no effect, or the subject resisted or escaped despite deployment
  • Electronic Monitoring Program (EMP): --> An alternative sentencing program where eligible individuals serve their sentence outside of a correctional facility under strict monitoring conditions, typically using advanced electronic equipment. Participants must be full time employees, full time students, and/or attend treatment programs. Participants must be recommended for the program by a Court Order.
  • 3-Foot Rule – traffic safety law that requires motorists to leave at least three feet of space between their vehicle and a bicyclist when passing from behind
  • Originates from California Vehicle code section 21760 that was enacted as part of the “Three feet for safety act” which went into effect on September 16, 2014. It is a part of broader efforts across many U.S. states to protect vulnerable road users like cyclists
  • MCF - Maguire Correctional Facility --> primarily houses male incarcerated persons. Since female incarcerated persons are not housed at MCF, only MSCC-based metrics are shown for female ADP and capacity.
  • MSCC - Maple Street Correctional Center --> for low to medium risk individuals. Houses both male and female incarcerated persons.
  • Racial and Identity Profiling Act (RIPA) also known as Assembly Bill 953:
  • Enacted in 2015, AB 953 requires California law enforcement agencies to collect and report data on stops, searches and detentions. These include perceived race, gender, orientation and reason for stop. The goal is to identify and address potential bias in policing practices. For reference, visit the Racial and Identity Profiling Act
  • Releases – represent individuals discharged from a correctional facility (due to bail, completed sentence, transfer, etc.)
  • RIPA Stop – a stop refers to any interactions where a deputy detains an individual or requests information
  • Sheriff’s Work Program (SWP) - An alternative sentencing program allowing eligible individuals to serve their time through supervised community labor rather than traditional full-time confinement in a correctional facility. Participants must be recommended for the program by a Court Order.
  • Split sentences – combined incarceration and period of supervised probation
  • Straight sentences – only incarceration
